Be involved in reimagining our future Cape Town

The City of Cape Town is considering ways to support the growth of the night and visitor economy. Amongst other interventions, this could involve changes to CBD boundaries, planning, building and heritage regulations.

Attention is being given to the growing importance of the ‘night economy’, especially a growing number of call centres in the central city that employ over 18,000 people, many of whom work shifts after 6pm. This is driving new service needs, like lighting for safety, night-time public transport, food vendors, and alike.

While there is a steadily growing residential population in the central CBD area, there is a huge visitor economy (70% of residential property), with many apartments managed for short-term rentals. There are mounting tensions between businesses running restaurants, bars and clubs that create a lot of noise and those living in and visiting the central city that want the vibe, buzz and excitement of big city life, but don’t want to be woken up by it at all hours of the night.

The planning process is grappling with how to design, zone and set suitable rules for the area that meet these competing needs and help to make it an attractive and thriving space for all to enjoy and earn a living. The City wants your input. They will be presenting on the plan and the process at the CIBRA AGM. Come, listen and gear up to provide written inputs. Claim your stake, but accept you are one of many voices who want different things!

The map above shows precincts where there is emerging interest in developing more detailed land use rules and design guidance to ensure that new developments contribute to a unique character.
